Course Description:

Introduces a neuro-somatic Parts paradigm centered on the Mindful Dual Attention Skill Set—a practical, trainable integration of mindfulness and clinical presence. Distinct from IFS and grounded in relational neuroscience, this approach helps EMDR and non-EMDR therapists identify and engage implicit Parts—including active defense and child Parts—across the “three brains” for lasting integration.

Learning Objectives: 

Day 1

  1. Distinguish deliberate practice from traditional clinical supervision, and identify three key elements that enhance therapeutic skill acquisition in Parts-based, neuro-somatic therapy.

  2. Explain the neurobiological effects of mindfulness practices and how these changes support trauma recovery, citing at least three specific brain regions or functions involved.

  3. Describe how disruptions in amygdala–PFC connectivity impair dual attention, and identify two somatic or mindfulness-based strategies that support relational safety and Parts integration.

  4. Describe the role of procedural and implicit memory in trauma and emotional regulation, differentiating it from explicit (declarative) memory.

 Day 2

  1. Identify the 3 autonomic states of the Vagus Nerve and summarize the felt sense differences among them.

  2. Explain the bi-directional, experience-dependent relationship between the brain’s Attachment and Defense Systems.

  3. Distinguish between upward and downward neuroplasticity and explain how it is relevant to clients in psychotherapy.

  4. Distinguish Child Parts from Active Defense Protector Parts and describe how to develop Missing Experiences that meet the needs of both.

Darla Sinclair is a LCSW-C (Licensed Certified Social Worker with a Clinical Specialty), which is the highest level of social work licensure in Maryland and. She can independently diagnose, treat, and evaluate mental health disorders and/or emotional conditions as well as independently practice psychotherapy. Darla is also a licensed LCSW in Pennsylvania, which is their highest level of social work licensure. Darla received her MSW in 1997 and BSW in 1996 from the University of Central FL. Her first Bachelor’s Degree was in Psychology from UMBC in 1989.
